White House Publishes FY 2023 Budget Memo

On August 27, the White House released a Memorandum on R&D Priorities for the FY 2023 Budget providing guidance to federal agencies as they develop budget requests. The memo listed pandemic readiness and prevention, climate and energy, emerging technology, equity in STEM, and national security and resilience. This is an important piece of the budget development process as federal agencies submit proposals to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), and analysts work with federal agencies to develop administration priorities.

Members of FABBS may be interested to note the explicit mention of supporting interdisciplinary research, including social sciences as well as the importance of considering the social determinants of health. Two other themes emerged: a commitment to open science – findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR) and reaching underserved communities.
