The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recently launched a new coalition advocating for the future of gun violence prevention (GVP) research funding – the GVP Research Roundtable. FABBS joined the discussion to collaborate on efforts to support top-line research funding asks that would include firearms research. The ad hoc community, comprised of groups representing clinicians, medical providers, patients, and researchers, would focus on durable, sustainable, long-term funding for research in this area. The additional allocated funding would support a diverse workforce inclusive of the full continuum of research – including scholars from medicine, public health, and other traditions – and enable multidisciplinary collaborations across federal agencies and private sectors.
The National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the National Institute of Justice – the research and evaluation agency of the U.S. Department of Justice, are the key federal agencies funding research in this area. It will be more than two decades since Congress first imposed a hiatus in funding this research at the CDC, by way of the Dickey Amendment (PLAW-104publ208.pdf (congress.gov) – named after former Congressman Jay Dickey, R-AR.
In March 2021, FABBS joined a broad coalition of colleagues on a letter to members of the House Committee on Appropriations to communicate Community support for CDC and NIH gun violence prevention research

FABBS signed on to a letter to members of the House Committee on Appropriations to support federal funding in firearms research for FY 2022.
“Continued and expanded funding could support the creation of additional, large,
multi-year studies and accelerate the rebuilding of a research community that shrank in the
decades before Congress restored this federal funding.”
