FABBS submitted comments in response to a National Science Foundation (NSF) request for information on the Agency Information Collection Activities; Comment Request; 2025 National Survey of College Graduates (FR Doc. 2024-19850).
In the comments, FABBS encouraged the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES) to include sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) questions in the upcoming National Survey of College Graduates (NSCG).
FABBS commended NCSES for adding similar questions to the 2025 Survey of Earned Doctorates (SED) cycle that began this past June. FABBS reenforced that the collection of SOGI data is necessary for serving the NSCG’s goals in providing an accurate understanding of the demographic composition of the US college-educated population and their participation in the scientific workforce, including the participation of marginalized groups such as sexual and gender minorities.
Further, FABBS emphasized that advancing the responsible and effective collection and use of SOGI data in NCSES’ surveys of the US scientific workforce, including the NSCG, is consistent with the directives of Executive Order 14075, Section 11, as well as NSF’s SOGI Data Action Plan and NSF’s most recent Equity Action Plan.
FABBS thanks Board Member Jon Freeman for his leadership and expertise on this important effort.
