On January 9th, the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) launched the HEalth care Rewards to Achieve Improved OutcomES (HEROES). The program seeks to increase preventative healthcare, reducing critical health problems. HEROES will target four illness areas: cardiovascular disease, opioid overdose, alcohol related illnesses, and complications during pregnancy and childbirth by rewarding improved health outcomes among communities that face poorer health outcomes compared to the national average.
ARPA-H is a new federal health agency created in March of 2022. ARPA-H promotes better health outcomes for everyone by supporting the development of high-impact solutions to society’s most challenging health problems. The agency provides funding for non- traditional, high risk research opportunities that lead to equitable, proactive health solutions.
This newest program will be of particular interest to FABBS members as it aims to implement behavioral interventions on a large scale. ARPA-H is currently soliciting input on the HEROES program.

ARPA-H refers to potential collaborators including community health centers, health consortiums, or nonprofits as “Health Catalysts” and is currently soliciting proposals. Once agreements are awarded, Health Catalysts will have three years to execute their proposed plans and show quantifiable reductions in their targeted health challenge. Showing improvement, ARPA-H will send Health Catalysts payments based on the terms agreed upon at the outset of their performance period.
FABBS has been actively monitoring and engaged with ARPA-A since the very conception of the agency, working to integrate the behavioral and brain sciences. If you are at all interested in learning more about ARPA-H or FABBS involvement, please contact us at info@fabbs.org.
