Bipartisan cosponsors in both chambers have introduced the Youth Mental Health Research Act. The bill would establish an initiative at the NIH to encourage collaborative research to improve youth mental health. While the text of the legislation is not yet public, drafts include the authorization of $100,000,000 to support the initiative and names National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), in collaboration with the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), and the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHHD) to lead the initiative.
Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-NJ) and Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) introduced HR 5976 in the House. In the Senate, Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Senator Katie Britt (R-AL) introduced the companion S. 3060.
