The Coalition for National Science Funding (CNSF) organized a reception to Honor Chairwoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX). She will be retiring after 30 years in Congress, having been a tremendous champion for science as the first African American and first woman to lead the House Science Committee. In this role, she worked collaboratively in a bipartisan fashion engaging the broad science community, to advance critical legislation including the Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors (CHIPS) and Science Act of 2022.
Ranking Member Frank Lucas (R-OK) hosted the event and Victor McCravy, National Science Board, served as the emcee for the evening. Over a dozen Members of Congress, including the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), and the Chairwoman of the House Appropriations Committee, Rosa De Lauro (D-CT), attended the event and said a few words about the Chairwoman. Members shared personal stories about how the Chairwoman had provided support and guidance over the years and praised her for her leadership of the House Science Committee. Dr. Panchanathan, Director of the National Science Foundation (NSF), spoke as well and was joined by other members of the NSF leadership.
Juliane Baron, Executive Director of FABBS, is one of four co-chairs of CNSF who organized the event. She worked together with Erin Heath, American Association for the Advancement of Science, Julia Jester, Association of American Universities and Miriam Quintal, Lewis-Burke Associates and their colleagues on the CNSF steering committee.
