The AAAS Science and Human Rights Coalition will host a Symposium on Higher Education and Human Rights on July 12th in Washington, DC. The Coalition was formed in 2009, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has served as the secretariat since its inception. FABBS was a founding member of the Coalition, in addition to the American Psychological Association, the American Educational Research Association, and many other scientific societies.
The Coalition hosts two events each year in which scientists and engineers interact with human rights practitioners to discuss issues of mutual concern. The upcoming Symposium on Higher Education and Human Rights will address questions about protecting scientific and academic freedom; supporting scientists displaced by conflict; providing equal and inclusive access to STEM education and careers; ensuring that academic governance structures protect human rights on campus; and a number of other topics.
