John T. Cacioppo, PhD

Presentation: Social Isolation 
Cacioppo reviews research findings to explain how feeling socially isolated in small doses contributes to social learning and social connection, but in large doses has toxic effects on our mental, physical, and social health.

Speaker Background:
Cacioppo is currently the president of the International Society for Social Neuroscience; a member of the Council of the Center for Scientific Review at the National Institutes of Health; a member of the Advisory Board of the Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences Division of the National Science Foundation; and the chair of the Board of Behavioral, Cognitive and Sensory Sciences at the National Research Council. He is a past president of four scientific societies, including the Association for Psychological Science, and a former chair of the Psychology Section of the Association for the Advancement of Science. Cacioppo is well known for his pioneering work on social neuroscience and his more recent theory and research on social isolation.
