FABBS Sponsors Cohen Silver for Capitol Hill Exhibition

May 23, 2018

FABBS was pleased to invite Roxane Cohen Silver, (Professor, University of California, Irvine) to present her NSF-funded research at the 24th Annual Coalition for National Science Funding’s Exhibition and Reception on Capitol Hill. The event, “Investments in Scientific and Educational Research: Fueling American Innovation,” took place on May 9th, 2018, in the Rayburn House Building. Cohen Silver represented the Society of Experimental Social Psychology, a FABBS member society.

The Exhibition featured thirty-three exhibitors representing a range of scientific societies and universities. Scientists mingled with members of Congress, Congressional staff, NSF leaders, and others in the community. FABBS was joined by several member societies —the American Psychological Association, the American Educational Research Association, and the Society for Research in Child Development— as exhibitors at the event.

Dr. Cohen Silver described her research on individual and collective responses to Hurricanes Harvey (TX) and Irma (FL). The research examined residents’ choices about evacuating as well as how media messages can affect these choices. The research is funded through awards from the National Science Foundation’s Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences Directorate.

Prior to the Exhibition, Cohen Silver spent the day on Capitol Hill meeting with staff in her elected officials offices: Senator Diane Feinstein (D-CA), Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA), and Rep. Mimi Walters (R-CA). She also met with House and Senate offices representing Texas, Florida, and Mississippi whose communities have been affected by disasters, including: Senator Roger Wicker (R-MS), Rep. John Culberson (R-TX), Rep. Randy Weber (R-TX), and Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL).
