Celebrate science! The March for Science will take place on April 22, 2017 in Washington DC, with over 500 satellite marches taking place elsewhere around the country and the world. Organizers encourage participants to register for their local marches so that they can best plan ahead, and also to note any interesting trends. For example, did you know that only 30% of registered marchers identify as scientists or science educators? The majority of marchers are members of the public who are not directly engaged in a field of science, which is an encouraging indicator that support for science is a widespread and universal concern, and not just limited to the scientific community.
FABBS is pleased to support the March for Science as an official partner. We join several of member scientific societies, the American Educational Research Association (AERA), the American Psychological Association (APA), and the Society of Experimental Social Psychology (SESP), in support. A summary of events immediately surrounding the March hosted by our societies and other coalitions and organizations can be found on our website.
Organizers and scientific societies supporting the March and related educational activities hope to build on the enthusiasm generated through the planning process, and continue to engage scientists and the public beyond the March. Following the March, a Week of Action is planned from April 23-29. March for Science organizers have outlined action items and suggested educational activities for each day of the week, culminating in attending the People’s Climate March on April 29th. The March for Science website will have updates on the Week of Action as they become available.
March activities in DC on Saturday will begin around the Washington Monument at 9:00 am, featuring a main stage of speakers to be announced and various teach-in tents where scientists and leaders will discuss topics in their fields of science, effective communication, and training in public advocacy. The March itself will begin at 2:00 pm and finish near the US Capitol.
